I have been in love with Chucky and the Child's Play series ever since the fist one came out back in 1988. But it was bride of Chucky that really made an impact on me - and for a reason that a lot of people don't even notice.
Every gay guy knows that of all the "gay' movies - there are none that are worth seeing (save Beautiful Thing). I have always told people that Bride of Chucky is my favorite gay movie. The response is usually somewhere along the lines of "What the Fuck?" Exactly.
Bride of Chucky was, and to my knowledge, is the only movie I have seen where there is a gay character without focus. The "best friend" nonchalantly spoke about his boyfriend. However, his being gay was never a focus of the character or the movie - nothing about coming out, fashion, AIDS, sex or Madonna was ever brought up. He was just a character who happened to be gay.
I thought that it was incredibly brave of the writer to take that position. Horror isn't really a genre where the fan base is vying for a splash of homosexuality in their movies. But the writer, Don Mancini, didn't care.
I later found out that Don is in fact gay. That made me appreciate his stance with Bride of Chucky even more. He didn't use his sexuality to gain extra spotlight or celebrity (i.e. Rosie.) He didn't try to exploit it for the sake of a hit (i.e. Madonna's vehicle The Next Best Thing.) And he didn't try to rub it in people's faces (i.e. Ellen's coming out.)
He gives interviews to Fangoria and The Advocate equally. I don't know how his sexuality has played in his personal life, but in his professional life, he has kept in a non-issue. For this, he deserves mad props. Mr. Mancinni truly has set a wonderful example - if only the rest of Hollywood could be as chill as he is. I don't think when he was writing lines like, "Martha Stewart can kiss my shiny plastic butt" he was trying to save the world. But I hope he knows that he has made an impact on it - in a very positive way.
